Bocapán bus station

The Bocapán bus station design challenge was determined by sun-exposure, local topology and logistical constraints.

The aim […] is to create an aura of hospitality and modernism while blending harmoniously with the local surf-town aesthetics

Seen from afar, the shape of the canopy is meant to evoke a type of crustacean shell. Seen from up close the structural sunshade composed of uni-directional ribs are finished with alternate hues of blue to poetically mirror the rhythm of the nearby ocean surf. The aim of the design challenge is to create an aura of hospitality and modernism while blending harmoniously with the local surf-town aesthetics. The focus on sun shading rather than rain protection is dictated by the semi-arid coastal environment with very low annual rainfall. The entire scope of the projected materials is designed to be transported by road in a 40′ shipping container. The lightweight precast CHS columns are designed with a hinge on the lower connection in order to be erected without the use of a heavy lift crane. Each individual rib section is designed to be installed with a telescopic aerial 2-man lift, within the allowed loading capacity.
